Tripodi’s trip will cost NSW a lot more than $290,000
Tuesday 12 May 2009
Finance Minister Joe Tripodi’s overseas trip to sell off the state’s electricity system will cost the state's households a lot more than the $290,000 squandered on travel expenses, according to Greens NSW MP John Kaye.
Dr Kaye said: "The privatisation of the state’s electricity retailers and the hand over of control of the power stations to the private sector will cost the state billions in lost revenue and squandered opportunities.
"Selling off publicly owned power assets will close the door on the state government being able to manage a transition to a sustainable electricity supply.
"This is bad news for households and the environment.
"The Greens NSW are introducing a bill into state parliament to stop this and other privatisations.
"The Protection of Public Ownership Bill will force governments to have to secure the support of both houses of parliament before they can sell publicly owned assets.
"This bill will not only stop the electricity sell-off, but also the privatisation of prisons, lotteries, ferries, superannuation and education land proposed by the Rees government," Dr Kaye said.
