O'Farrell's carbon price myths put jobs at risk

Saturday 20 August 2011

Premier Barry O'Farrell and Treasurer Mike Baird have been caught exaggerating the negative impacts of the carbon price package on NSW. They have talked down the benefits of a transition to clean energy economy, according to Greens NSW MP John Kaye.

'Carbon tax job outlook upbeat' Sydney Morning Herald, 20 August, page 1

Dr Kaye said: "Coalition politicians are waging a war on science and economics to pursue cheap political advantage.

"Barry O'Farrell and Mike Baird are prepared to sacrifice the tens of thousands of new jobs in NSW alone in order to terrify voters and cash in on the hysteria around the carbon price.

"Study after study shows that the transition to renewable energy can generate many more time the number of jobs lost in the old polluting industries.

"While the Premier and his Treasurer might lack the imagination to work towards something other than a coal and gas dependent state, they should tell the whole truth about the impacts of the carbon price.

"Talking up the job losses and costs while hiding the gains might boost Mr O'Farrell's electoral stocks but it will undermine urgent action to build the new green energy economy.

"Premier Barry O'Farrell and Treasurer Mike Baird should have the courage to stand up to the climate deniers in their party room and amongst their supporters.

"Their obligation is to steer the state through the transition to renewable energy without playing a damaging game of cheap politics," Dr Kaye said.
