Roozendaal a poor choice for NSW economy
Monday 08 September 2008
The appointment of former NSW Roads Minister Eric Roozendaal as the state's Treasurer is bad news for public services and infrastructure investment, according to Greens NSW MP John Kaye.
Dr Kaye said: "In his previous portfolio Mr Roozendaal was a policy free zone who was the puppet of the RTA.
"In his new job, Mr Roozendaal is at risk of becoming a mouthpiece for the slash and burn policies of senior NSW Treasury bureaucrats.
"NSW needs a Treasurer who has the intellectual strength to provide the people of this state with an infrastructure investment-led recovery.
"There is little in Mr Roozendaal's background as a minister and party hack that would give confidence in his ability to overcome the pressure from Treasury mandarins.
"This state is technically in recession and will remain there until new transport facilities, schools and hospitals are built to get the economy moving.
"NSW also needs a Treasurer who focuses on building a long term industrial base in renewable energy and mass transport manufacturing.
"The discredited dry economic arguments peddled by NSW Treasury have led this state into a dead end.
"Mr Roozendaal's first task is to demand that NSW get its fair share of Prime Minister Kevin Rudd's $25 billion surplus.
"He needs to work with other state and territory Treasurers to demand that in tough economic times, Canberra lets go of some of its hoarded booty to keep services and infrastructure investment afloat.
"If that takes a new Boston Tea Party then so be it.
"The alternative is to make low and middle income households pay for the failures of the Carr and Iemma governments," Dr Kaye said.
