Rees should kick ticket rorters out of state’s stadiums
Wednesday 08 April 2009
Ticket agencies that hit consumers with extra fees and charges should be barred from state-owned stadiums and venues, according to Greens NSW MP John Kaye.
Commenting on an investigation by consumer group Choice, Dr Kaye said: “People attending events and concerts are falling victim to the two dominant ticketing agencies, Ticketek and Ticketmaster.
“Consumers are being ripped off with hidden fees and charges. They are billed for printing their own ticket at home. Others are forced to pay a collection fee after already being hit with a surcharge on the ticket price.
“The Rees government quite rightly takes a hard line against ticket scalpers. It is time to apply the same standards to the ticketing agency duopoly that also rip-off ticket buyers.
“NSW Premier Nathan Rees can solve this problem. He can bar ticketing agencies that are fleecing consumers at state-owned venues.
“The NSW government owns the four largest sporting venues in NSW – Sydney Olympic Stadium, the SCG, Sydney Football Stadium and Newcastle’s Energy Australia stadium.
“Other significant venues in NSW administered by state government authorities include the Opera House, Olympic Park and Centennial Park.
“Consumers are fed up with hidden fees being added to ticket prices. Small independent agencies with good pricing practices and the venues themselves could provide less exploitative ticketing,” Dr Kaye said.
