Electricity retailer privatisation to hit Illawarra hard

Thursday 09 October 2008

An important conference being held in Wollongong today will bring Rees government plans to privatise retail electricity under the spotlight, according to Greens NSW MP John Kaye.

Dr Kaye said: “The Australia For Sale conference will be discussing how selling public assets affects the community.

“Privatisation of electricity retailers would undermine the state's ability to manage demand and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

“At a time of rising prices household electricity bills would skyrocket.

“Only public owned retailers can work with households to reduce demand.

“Retailer privatisation would be a disaster for the environment and households in the Illawarra.

“As former Premier Iemma admitted at his farewell media conference, pushing ahead with the sell-off of the retailers means privatisation of the state's generators would inevitably follow.

“A privatised electricity retail sector would shift the cost of addressing reliance on carbon based energy away from the corporate sector and onto households.

“Premier Rees has no mandate to push ahead with this plan B, which was not supported by his own experts.

“Privatising electricity retailers must be scrapped immediately,” Dr Kaye said.
