No Mandate, No Privatisation
John will introduce the "Protection of Public Ownership Bill 2009" into the Legislative Council later this month. The 'No Mandate, No Privatisation' bill would force each member of parliament to face their voters and own up to the consequences of any future sell-offs
The bill, if passed, would require the approval of both houses of parliament to privatise publicly owned assets such as prisons, the electricity system and it separate functions, and NSW lotteries. The bill would also put restrictions on the sale and use of land owner by a public education authority.
The Rees Government is moving forward with a raft of plans that will see the states capital assets, important social assets and revenue generating assets, being sold off to pay the operating costs of this government. This is bad economics and bad social policy and will leave NSW with reduced economic capacity in the long term and at the whim of private interests.
